Honey Oil is undoubtedly one of the top picks of most weed enthusiasts in Canada; that’s no smokable cannabis that gets you in the “zone”. You may recognize it from its many other names, such as hash oil, wax, shatter, BHO, or dabs. You can inhale it steamed using a vaporizer or spread it on a piece of paper and roll it into a “Thai stick” joint. It can quickly become an acquired taste.

First, learn what Honey oil is and where it was extracted from?

What Is Honey Oil?

Honey oil is made unique by its high THC concentration. A typically dried cannabis flower may have 20 percent or more THC. But, when taken through the extraction process, you end up with a more potent product with less plant matter. The end-product is pure, with an 80 percent THC concentration or higher.

Honey oil comes from the extraction of terpenes, CBD, THC, and other essential compounds from dried cannabis flowers using oil. It gets its name from its sticky texture and exact amber colour. Yet, the oil is not as sweet as Honey.

Easy Steps on How to Make Honey Oil

The process of making honey oil is long, but the result makes the work worth it. Due to the highly flammable solvents used, it is best done outside instead of indoors. Also, be patient and avoid speeding up the process.

When making honey oil at home, you may use alcohol or butane. There are two types of alcohol you can use two methods. The QWET method uses quick wash ethanol, while the QWISO method uses isopropyl alcohol. The techniques appear similar in the beginning but differ later.

The supplies you need include finely ground weed (not powder), the alcohol solvents, two mason jars, a Pyrex dish or tray, a pot for boiling water, a tray, and coffee filters. If you use butane as your solvent, you will need a honeybee extractor and at least two cans containing high-grade butane.

Method 1: Make Oil Using Alcohol

  1. Measure 7 grams of first-class buds to get highly potent oil.
  2. Break apart the buds into small pieces, but do not grind them. Grinding would make it difficult to extract the fine particles from the oil. The buds should be thoroughly dried, and if they aren’t crisp, place them into a 195-degrees-Fahrenheit oven for a few minutes. Heating also causes the cannabinoids to lose their acidity and become psychoactive.
  3. Once the weed can crumble in your hands, it is dry.
  4. Get the dried bits inside one of the mason jars, shut the lid, and place the container inside a freezer.
  5. Take the other pot and do the same with your chosen alcohol solvent.
  6. Measure out 2.5 ounces or 74 millilitres. Once the alcohol temperature drops to -62 degrees Fahrenheit, pour it into the mason jar with the buds.
  7. The alcohol covers the weed buds by about an inch. Let the mixture rest for some time. The direction to take from this third step depends on the type of alcohol chosen. If you chose the QWISO method that uses isopropyl alcohol, do the following steps: Stir the two ingredients for about 20 seconds, then strain. If you chose the QWET method that uses quick wash ethanol: Stir the mixture gently and place it back into the freezer. Give it another three minutes, get the mix out, and strain using coffee filters. For a higher purity, strain the fluid another time.
  8. Pour your filtered solution into the Pyrex dish or tray and place it in a water bath. By now, you may already see the characteristics of honey oil. The beautiful goldish-brown colour is evident.
  9. The water should be bubbling as it boils, with a temperature of between 158 and 176 degrees Fahrenheit. Since alcohol evaporates quickly, you will soon only have your precious oil. Alternatively, instead of a water bath, you could leave the tray out in the sun. Alcohol evaporates and leaves the hash oil in the tray.

In only those steps, you get your homemade honey oil. Use it how you like.

Method 2: Make Honey Oil Using Butane

For this method, the technique is done outdoors because butane is more massive than oxygen and tends to linger longer on surfaces and your skin. With butane being highly flammable, accidents could happen. Go outside where the wind can blow the butane away.

  1. Get a metallic, glass, or plastic tube that can hold 14 grams or half an ounce of liquid.
  2. Make a hole on one end and five small ones on the other. The big hole is for the butane, while the small holes are for the THC oil to pour through.
  3. Insert the dried cannabis buds into the tube and place a coffee filter on one end, inside the lid.
  4. Take the tube and hold it up two inches above the dish where the oil should drain.
  5. Next, attach the butane nozzle to the tube’s top hole and release the gas. For the 7 grams of weed, 10 ounces or 300 millilitres gas should be enough.
  6. Allow the butane and oil extractor to work for you. Soon, a greenish or pale-yellow liquid will start to pour from the smaller holes. The process only takes a few minutes.
  7. Blow into the tap hole or gently tap the tube to let the last drops of butane out.
  8. Allow the butane in the dish to evaporate naturally or clasp the bowl in your hands. For a speedy process, place the container in some warm water.
  9. When all the butane has evaporated, scrape off the residue from the dish. You now have your honey oil.

Either of these methods you use and follow should get you a sticky golden-brown substance. Scour it out and store it in a glass bottle or glass container. Store the oil properly to keep it fresh longer. It loses its potency over time.
