As Covid-19 cases continue to rise across the globe, the need for vaccines tends to pressure medical specialists and researchers. In partnership with the National Institutes of Health, Moderna, Inc. has recorded initial success in testing eight participants for the vaccine trial. It was noted that these participants developed novel coronavirus antibodies — enough for these people to get immunity against the pneumonia-like virus.

Marijuana to Prevent Coronavirus Infection

Although the trial has given assurance, it’s not 100% guaranteed that the vaccine will be available in a few months. It still needs approval from the FDA, and only then it gets distributed to affected countries. It is important to note that the creation of the vaccines is not a walk in the park. It takes dollars and months to create a global cure that will put an end to the pandemic.

In Canada, reports have emerged of the probability of marijuana to prevent the Coronavirus infection. A study conducted at the University of Lethbridge says that certain marijuana strains could likely ward off the Covid-19 virus. Over a dozen strains were recorded to be useful in preventing the virus from spreading and transmitting it to one’s mouth, intestines, and lungs.

Dr. Igor Kovalchuk, the university’s head researcher said that every possible therapeutic opportunity and avenue needs to be considered. He also added that the number of viruses has reduced through trials, introducing another milestone in fighting off the deadly disease. Meanwhile, the research team has pursued partnerships for clinical trials. If given the right attention, the research could carry out through mouth wash, gargle, inhalants, and gel caps.

About 13 CBD extracts have been identified to change the ACE2 levels. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 or ACE2 serves as the receptor for SARS-CoV. It acts as the main host cell receptor for the coronavirus and grants it easy access to cause infection. Aside from ACE2, the research also concluded that marijuana strains can also control serine protease TMPRSS2. This gene helps create a protein that transports coronavirus to human cells.

As CBD extracts are theorized to help in fighting off CoVid-19, medical cannabis is on the verge of getting its fame in the search for a vaccine. Also known as cannabidiol, research reports that this drug may help reduce the chance of catching coronavirus.

The study has nothing to do with using recreational marijuana. Canada’s marijuana industry will experience a turning point if the research proves how effective the drug could be in preventing the flu-like virus. However, it needs more trials and further study. The vaccine is not yet at hand.

The Canadian government is keeping its regulations to contain the virus. Strict compliance with the guidelines is still necessary to avoid the spread of Covid-19. Social distancing and staying at home are some of the precautionary measures individuals should follow.
